World premiere of a new work for string quartet: a poetic translation of mathematical ideas into sound. Composer Emily Howard’s music is known for its particular connection with science and she has a background in mathematics and computer science. Regular conversations with mathematicians and scientists enhance her creative work and over the last year Emily has been exchanging ideas with mathematician Marcus du Sautoy, the Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science, and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford.

Mark-Anthony Turnage Contusion (20’)

A brand new work from Darren Bloom, 2016 RPS Composition Prizewinner, joins two other recent works the Piattis have a close relationship with. Phibbs’ first quartet was a Piatti commission in 2014, and Turnage’s Contusion gained a prizewinning performance from them at the 2015 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition.
